This rather chilling choice of words from the Borg right before assimilation shows the benefits of a hive mind and thus the shared knowledge of several species and cultures.
But actually, over the years, the Borg found out they were wrong , that resistance, in fact, isn't futile, after all. Both Commander Riker (with a little help from everyone's favourite android, Data) and Captain Janeway kicked a bunch of Borg butt!
Perhaps the Borg should come and talk with the physicists and electrical engineers among us Star Trek fans. We know how to make resistance futile indeed, as can be seen in this colourful diagram :).
